Chocolat

Karma here: I had a great time at the discussion -- a fun and diverse group of women. I have started this book ... and the movie... several times, but was never able to finish -- for any number of reasons. I found the book, now that I've actually finished it, charming and inspiring. Being a new comer in a small close-knit town is never easy -- at least I never found it to be. Harris creates the characters with depth and soul and I found myself getting lost in the story. I was able to make a number of comparisons between Vianne's experiences and my own....and saw similiarities between many of the characters in the book -- and many of the characters in Shoshone. There is a religion that is not my own that maintains what feels like a great deal of control. The Mexican immigrants here are treated, in some ways, the way the gypsies were in the book. But there are those generous few in both the book and in my life that are willing to share their magic and not pass judgement on the unknown. Those are the people that add the sweetness to the chocolate in the book -- and my world. I'm enjoying the Language of Baklava -- it's a good read so far -- and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series -- many thanks to Pat for bringing this series here. I'm not that far into the Baklava book -- but I'm loving the comparisons between her mother's cooking and her father's. I'm going to try the rice for company recipe soon! Anybody else?
